Worship Services
If you are unfamiliar with churches of Christ, you may find the worship
services different from what you have seen elsewhere. The Sunday services
consist of five things, which are based on the commandments and examples,
pertaining to the New Testament church. That which we offer to God in worship
consists of:
- Prayer: I Thess. 5:17-18; Acts 12:5.
- Singing: The singing will not be accompanied with instruments
or chorus, but will be with each individual singing from the heart (Eph.
5:19; Col. 3:16; I Cor. 14:15).
- Communion: I Cor. 11:23-29.
- Preaching: Acts 20:7; Mark 16:15.
- Giving: Christians are to give cheerfully, as they have been
prospered by the Lord (I Cor. 16:2; II Cor. 9:7).
There is no guidance in the scriptures as to the time of day that we should
have our service. Most congregations have a service on Sunday morning and
another on Sunday evening. Also, there are no instructions as to how long a
service should last or the order of the service. However, we do know that God is
not the author of confusion, and all things are to be done decently and in order
(I Cor. 14:33, 40). We are also to worship God in spirit and in truth (John
4:24).
